Buying Shipping Containers FAQs

What’s the difference between buying a new versus an old used container?

Firstly, let’s explain the difference. New build, one trip containers are durable, built to last and of the highest quality. They’re called ‘one trip’ because they’ve had only one journey at sea. All new build containers come into the country the same way. The containers are ordered, they get built and then they are shipped to Australia with a one load cargo to make for a viable shipping voyage. When they arrive in the country, the cargo is offloaded and the shipping containers are delivered directly to our depot.

All the other ‘grades’ of shipping containers will have been at sea for many years.

Newly built containers come with a lockbox, internal lashing rings, air vents, easy access doors, minimal exterior dents and timber flooring. They’re in good working condition and guaranteed to be wind and water-tight (WWT), vermin proof and cargo worthy.

Second hand, older or used containers on the other hand, are quite simply, those that have been used multiple times before.

The condition and appearance of a used shipping container will vary depending on the life it has led whilst in use. Used containers are usually wind and water-tight (WWT) and vermin proof but will often have visible signs of wear and tear such as external or internal repairs, dents and scratches or rust. If you’re not too fussed about the aesthetics of your container, then buying a used one can be a cost effective option.

The Sparebox team will help work out which one is best for you and send photos of the containers – inside and out – to help you choose. If you’re in the area, you can also arrange to visit our depot to have a look for yourself, compare our containers and pick your own.

How much do shipping containers cost to buy?

Prices vary depending on the container type (standard or high cube), the size, age, grade (new or used), availability and location.

Here’s a rough guide to our last year’s prices to help you size up what might be best for you. All prices are ex GST.

What’s a reefer?

Reefers are Refrigerated Containers.

Should I hire or buy a shipping container?

Many businesses in Australia are increasingly opting for shipping container hire, due to the flexibility it offers, but it really depends on your business circumstances and needs.

Is buying a shipping container a good investment?

We think so yes! Buying your own shipping container is an ideal investment if you’re planning on long term use, which is about 12 months or longer.

Or if you plan to modify or re-purpose your container, then purchasing it outright gives you total flexibility to custom modify it – for whatever use you like and for as long as you need it.

And then depending on what you’ve used it for, you can consider re-selling your container when you are done with it.

Containers tend to have a long lifespan thanks to their construction and durable material. They can last well over 10 years, depending on the condition when it was purchased.

Factors that affect the condition are mainly where it’s stored and what it’s been used for – whether that be for storage only or for shipping.

Is there a shipping container shortage in Australia?

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 turned what we all knew as everyday life upside down. The subsequent effects and disruptions to supply chains were widespread and global, and affected many industries including shipping containers.

Factory closures, reduction in and workforce shutdowns caused a disturbance in the usual shipping patterns of goods around the world and a huge backlog of containers in ports. As a result, freight costs and container prices skyrocketed.

All of these factors created a shortage of shipping containers, making it difficult to acquire what was once readily available.

Currently, standard empty containers are pretty easily available again in Australia and prices have come back down a little. However, there is still limited availability of specialised containers such as refrigerated and smaller, mini containers.

Is it possible to buy land and put a shipping container on it?

Yes! Containers can be a great choice for many uses on your property whether it be for extra storage, an outdoor room, studio, workroom or equipment storage – to name just a few. If you’re thinking of putting a container on your property (either permanently or temporarily), you may need to check your local council rules and regulations first.

What are shipping container flat racks?

Flat rack shipping containers are specialised containers primarily crafted for the transport of heavy loads, oversized cargo, and items that can’t fit into standard containers. They’re commonly used to transport machinery, vehicles, construction equipment, and other substantial items. Here’s a breakdown of the distinct features and characteristics of flat rack containers:

Open Sides and Top: Differing from standard shipping containers, flat racks lack side walls and a roof. This design ensures convenient loading and unloading of oversized cargo from the sides or above.

Collapsible End Walls: Many flat rack containers feature end walls that can be folded down. This trait aids in storing and stacking the containers when they’re not in active use. It’s worth noting, however, that some flat racks have fixed ends.

Strength and Durability: Built to transport heavy cargo, flat racks are reinforced with sturdy corner posts and a robust base, ensuring they can manage the weight and stress of substantial cargo.

Lashing Rings: To anchor the cargo securely, flat rack containers come equipped with lashing rings. These rings are usually located on the base and corner posts.

Versatility: Owing to their open design, flat rack containers can house cargo that would be unsuitable for standard shipping containers. They are adept at handling items with irregular shapes, lengthy items, and particularly heavy loads.

Sizes: The predominant sizes for flat rack containers align with the standard lengths of regular containers: 20-foot and 40-foot lengths.

Transportation: Although these containers are typically used for sea freight, they’re also suitable for rail or road transport.

Usage Beyond Shipping: Apart from their primary purpose, flat rack containers are sometimes utilised in construction or other sectors as bridges or platforms, owing to their inherent strength and resilience.

When thinking of employing a flat rack container, it’s vital to understand the cargo’s dimensions and weight to select the appropriate type and size. Furthermore, since the cargo remains exposed, it might be prudent to utilise tarps or other protective covers to protect the cargo from weather conditions during transport.

What are openside containers (opening containers)?

Opening containers are specialised shipping units with doors or openings on multiple sides for improved accessibility. Distinct from standard containers, they offer:

  • Versatile Access: Doors can be found on the sides, both ends, or even the top.
  • Simplified Loading/Unloading: Ideal for bulky or awkwardly shaped items.
  • Secure and Durable: Built with robust locking systems and designed to endure long-distance transport.
  • Standard Sizes: Commonly available in 20-foot and 40-foot lengths.
  • Varied Uses: Beyond shipping, they’re suitable for mobile workshops, pop-up shops, and more.

These containers provide solutions to unique logistics challenges.
