Buying A Used Shipping Container FAQs

What are the benefits of buying a used shipping container?

What are the benefits of buying a used shipping container?
A used shipping container is cheaper than buying a brand new shipping container. So cost is the number one benefit of buying a used shipping container. You can expect to pay about half the amount vs buying a new one. So you’ll get instant, affordable onsite storage space at a budget-friendly price, which can then be used for static storage, to securely transport goods or a range of other purposes.

Used containers are also readily available and come in a variety of sizes and conditions (also known as shipping container grades) so you’ll still have a choice of what to buy.

Our most popular used shipping containers are 20ft and 40ft standard containers. If you’re looking for something else, we also stock a range of speciality used shipping containers for sale.

  • used refrigerated containers
  • NOR’s (non operating refrigerated containers)
  • insulated containers
  • mini containers.

You can look at and select any of our second hand container by visiting our depot or giving us a call and we’ll send photographs for you to choose from. You can find our used shipping container prices above, or clearance sale shipping containers in our clearance section.

How much does it cost to deliver a used shipping container?

How much does it cost to deliver a used shipping container?
The cost to get a used shipping container delivered will depend on tow main factors:

  1. the distance from our depot to your delivery address
  2. the type of vehicle required to transport the container – Tilt Tray, Side Loader, or Crane truck (these are also referred to as Hiab which is a lorry mounted crane).

We only use our own experienced drivers who will deliver and position the container exactly where you want it.

Customers can also choose to organise their own transport to pick up their purchased container from our depot.

What would the condition of a second hand shipping container be?

What would the condition of a second hand shipping container be?
Typically, all used shipping containers are those that are no longer in service. This means that they have been retired from their original use or purpose.

All used shipping containers will show signs of wear and tear. The life which a shipping container has led will determine its individual condition. Factors such as how and where it was stored, under what weather conditions (covered or out in the open, at sea, on land), how it was handled for loading and unloading, and what was stored in the container all play a part in it’s ultimate condition at retirement.

A used container will have dents, surface scratches and/or rust, faded paint, repair patches, a stained or repaired floor and scuff marks.

All of the used shipping containers we sell or rent are wind and water tight (WWT) and are graded according to their condition.

When selecting a used container, it’s helpful to think about what you intend to use the container for in order to choose the appropriate grade. If you’re unsure, we’re always on hand to have a chat and help discuss your options.

What is the lifespan of a used shipping container?

What is the lifespan of a used shipping container?
There are a number of factors that determine the remaining lifespan of a used shipping container. These are all based on it’s condition, or ‘grade’ and include things such as:

  • its prior use (what was stored in it, whether it was used on a ship or remained in one place)
  • how many repairs it has had
  • how long it has been in use
  • how many trips it has done

A used shipping container is generally retired from its duties on cargo ships after 10 – 15+ years.

Depending on the container’s condition at this point, it could last for many more years if taken care of.

By comparison, a new shipping container’s lifespan can be upwards of 20+years depending on where it’s stored and what it is being used for.

What used container inspection options do you offer?

What used container inspection options do you offer?
All of our used shipping containers are inspected (internally and externally), surveyed and graded as soon as they arrive at our depot and before we offer them for sale.

The doors and seals are checked to ensure they are in working order and that the container is wind and water tight (WWT).

If needed, repairs are carried out by the qualified personnel at our depot.

You can visit our depot to have a look at our stock and compare the different grades available.

It’s best to call ahead of time to make an appointment with us and we’re open Monday to Friday 7.30AM – 5.00PM.

If you can’t make it to our depot we’ll discuss your options over the phone and send you photos to help with your decision.

If you need it, we’ll provide CSC certification certificates for used containers which are being used for domestic, rail & international transport.
